Notes About the Piece:
This cake stand (and cake!) was made for a couple that have known each other since they were basically children. Their wedding was a fantastic celebration of a love that is strong, has endured, and yet somehow still has the playfulness and levity of a two kids with a crush. I feel lucky and honored to have played a small part in helping this celebration happen.
The live edge, oak, crosscuts were felled and taken from trees on the bride’s parent’s property — making the piece that much more meaningful.
The cake was a traditional spice cake with a homemade cinnamon dolce fill, and the florals were perfectly selected by the bride. Easily argued that the cake took us way longer to build than the stand!
The Build:
1.
First, the twist-in hardware and footers were added to the bottom tier with the drill and slightly smaller bit than the footer hardware to ensure a snug fit.

In the process of adding the footer hardware, a small piece of the crosscut cracked off. After a minor freak out and a little bit of glue and wedging, the seam wasn’t even noticeable.

Once the footers were on, it was time to level. It was important to work from the bottom up so that the cake would sit level on the stand.

The bottom flange for the middle tier was then screwed into the top of the bottom tier nipple, and the middle tier crosscut was placed on top. Using the level and a few shims, the middle tier was secured to the flange.

The center point on the middle tier was found again by the cross section of two diameter measurements, and the top flange was secured. Then, the second nipple was screwed into place.
6.
Step 4 was repeated for the top tier. This level required quite a few more shims as the crosscut was far from level.
