Mid century tv console

Project Details:

Another behemoth of a project to match the shelving and cabinet unit I put together! This mid century style TV console was created using predominantly dowel joints, with a few dado, and slot joints in the mix as well!

For a full run down of the how to, check out the DIY video above! But as just a few additional notes. I thought a lot more about wood movement and improving the structural integrity of the joints on this console as compared to the shelving and cabinet unit. While I tossed around the idea of a few dovetail options to strengthen some of the connection points, I ended up landing back on dowels so that this console would match the original piece it would eventually sit side by side next to. To improve though, I did end up using twice the amount of dowels for this unit, in the hopes of adding some longevity to it!

I also accounted better for wood movement in the door panels, using a tongue and groove to secure the lattice into the panel, rather than simply gluing end grain to long grain. This was actually really fun and also mad the glue up feel way more put together.

The last upgrade I did on this one, included a greater focus on finish. Finishing is still very much my weak point – I suppose impatience may have something to do with it. haha! But this go around I really tried to take my time, work my way up through the grits, and focus on any imperfections.

I still need work, but as this console sits next to its predecessor and pair, I can already see improvement, so I’ll take that as a win.
